When improved air traffic monitoring was required for regional aircraft flying over the mountainous area between Hobart and Launceston in Tasmania, Airservices Australia assessed multilateration and secondary radar surveillance options. It is understood that around 12 SSRs would have been required to provide the necessary coverage, at a reported average cost of approximately $3 million per location. Airservices opted for multilateration to provide equivalent coverage over the whole route, for what has been unofficially reported as less than the cost of a single radar installation.
